Widely used in the commercial production of sugar. In the Chez Republic and Slovakia it is used in the production of a kind of rum like distilled spirit called Tuzemak. (That was just FYI, I don't advise trying it) A thick, dark and unrefined sugary syrup is also made from sugar beet by grating the beet and cooking it for a few hours, the mix is then pressed until only the juice remains. The juice is then re-boiled until a concentration with the consistency of syrup is produced.
