Planting and care:  Watermelons grow best when direct sown as transplanting can cause stress and even plant death if not done right. If you want to use seed trays and start indoors then transplant out after you are sure the last frost has passed. Direct sow watermelon seed after the soil has reached 21 degrees celcius to avoid poor germination. Make sure the last frost has passed as watermelons cannot tolerate frost. Watermelons are heavy feeders and prefer soil with a pH between 6 and 6.8. Make sure the soil is well composted, loamy and well drained. Plant about 60 cm apart. Keep soil moist but not waterlogged whilst germinating. Whilst watermelons are developing do not let the plant get water stressed. Once fruit has set, reduce water slightly as dry weather makes for sweeter watermelons (do not water starve them). Male and female flowers will be produced separately on the same plant so pollination is necessary for fruit to develop. Place straw or other suitable material between the fruit and the ground to avoid rotting. A green watermelon (not ready for harvest) will have a white patch on its underside, a ripe watermelon will have a deep cream or yellow patch on its underside.
